The Open Theatre Performance Centre is situated on the Cyprus International University (CIU) campus, located on the northern side of the island. This diverse environment hosts communities from over 100 countries, predominantly from Muslim backgrounds. The Centre serves as a communal space for daily life and is well-equipped for large-scale extracurricular events, seamlessly blending public and social activities. It enriches international student life and fosters social and cultural exchange between Turkish Cypriots and the university’s diverse community, promoting cultural pluralism and enhancing urban life quality. Completed in Summer 2022, the Centre functions as a green park and versatile venue for various experiences, including sports, performances, musical and cinematic events, and graduation ceremonies with a capacity to host up to 10,000 people.
The stage faces a 4,000 square-meter lawn and it is designed to accommodate demountable or reconfigurable equipment, such as an inflatable cinema screen and consoles for audio and lighting control. A grand shell structure partially wraps around the site, cantilevering up to 17 meters over the stage, embracing the soft “lawn” between the main structure and the control building at the back. This landscape features a gradual concave incline to improve sightlines between the stage and the audience. Additionally, there are backstage spaces for performers for preparation and storage of stage equipment. The control building provides indoor and outdoor spaces for sound control, audio mixing, lighting, and video performance. Sustainability is integral to the design, relying on daily use of the site. The partially roofed design and minimal enclosures create an equitable environment that is energy-saving and cost-effective. The Centre reinterprets historical amphitheatres of the region, addressing modern sustainability concerns while enriching university and local community life.
